HISTORY – LEGEND AND LORE The indigenous Maya of the Yucatan Peninsula were the first to experience the wonderful aura of Isla Mujeres. For them, the island was sacred, and they devoted themselves to the worship of Ixchel, the goddess the moon and of fertility. Today, UNIK’s guests can still visit the remains of her temple not far from the resort.

Their secluded temple would become known to the outside world in 1517, when the ship of Spanish conquistador Fernando Hernandez de Cordoba was blown off course and he and his men stumbled upon these hallowed shores. Seeing only women and structures filled with idols of female deities, he christened it “Isla Mujeres”, Spanish for “Isle of Women”. According to the legend, no men were around as they were all “out fishing”…
